About

Krystal is an online magazine aimed at young, black, British women.

It was launched in July 2009 to fill the gap that is prominent in the British media. There are not enough black women’s magazines and focused, confident and ambitious black women are often left unsatisfied with what they read in mainstream media.

The foundations for Krystal were first laid in 2006, when journalism students Melissa Allison-Forbes and Pavel Choudhury created a dummy magazine for a university project.

After much research they found that the newsstands were crying out for a quality magazine appealing to the needs of young, black, British women. Both were friends as well as classmates, and always vowed to take their vision further.

They wanted to create a magazine that was specifically aimed at young black women. They wanted to offer these women somewhere they could go and find out about issues affecting their community; somewhere they could go for advice, news and features.

After Melissa and Pavel graduated with an MA in journalism from Kingston University, and through the persistence of their tutor Beth Brewster, they decided to expand the project and establish the magazine. And so Krystal was born.
