The foundations for Krystal were first laid in 2006, when then journalism students Melissa Allison-Forbes and Pavel Choudhury created a dummy magazine for a university project. Together, after much research they found that the newsstands were crying out for a quality magazine appealing to the needs of young black women.
Both were friends as well as class mates, and always vowed to take their vision further. They wanted to create a magazine that was specifically aimed at young black women. Somewhere these women could go and find out about issues affecting their community. Somewhere they could go for advice, news and features. After both graduated with a masters in journalism from Kingston University and through the persistence of their tutor Beth Brewster, they decided to expand the project and establish the magazine for the shelves. And so Krystal was born.
Krystal, a lady’s best friend, will offer quality journalism to those who want to excel in all aspects of life and feel good about themselves. Krystal will be that friend through the ups and downs, and is here to stay.
